Getting a doctor in Barcelona, Spain

Step by step on how to register with a local doctor here in barcelona, despite other things you here it is very simple once you know how..

First you need to get a empadronamiento, this is simply you registering with your city’s community. Legally everyone who lives in Spain should be registered in the community where they live. This will enable you to be able to do things such as get married, get certain visas and to apply for a local health card. This does not make you an official resident but will make it possible to get your own doctor etc.

Where do I go?

In Barcelona the office is “Oficina de Atención al Ciudadano” located at
Plaça Sant Miquel, 4, 08002 Barcelona.

What documents do I need?

  • The application form (hoja de empadromiento).. They will give you this at the office.
  • Passport, NIE or national identity card.
  • Proof of address (this will need to be either a utility bill in your name, a rent contract in your name or if you’re not on a contract you will need the person on the contract to sign your form and vouch for you living there. They will need ID also.

OK so once you have your empadronamiento (they will give it you straight away at the office) you just need to register with your local clinic. For this you will need to present your empadronamiento form along with your work permit and work contract. They will then register you and you receive a card in the post within a few days. You will be assigned to a doctor in that building and you can then make appointment from now on in there. In an emergency the same card should be used to get medical help in the hospitals in Spain.
